Baseball Opens SAA Tournament Play on Thursday

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team is gearing up for a postseason run in the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Tournament. The team will compete in the Rhodes regional beginning Thursday against the Lynx at 11 a.m. in Memphis.

CONFERENCE FORMAT: The top-two teams, Berry and Rhodes, earned rights to host the 2018 regional rounds. The winners of the of the double-elimination bracket will play a best-of-three series on the weekend of April 28-29 at the site of the highest remaining seed.  

SWING AND A MISS: Drew Mancuso surpassed the 200-strikeout mark in his career this season thanks to a career-best 66 punchouts in 2018. Averaging 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings, the senior is 3-4 on the year with a 4.32 earned run average.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA: Trey Akins has been an offensive threat for the Tigers in 2018. The junior leads the team in batting average (.366) and in hits (45). The marks are eighth-best and 14th-best in the SAA. The Birmingham, Ala. native racked up 22 RBI, tied for the team lead with Chris McNulty and Jared Demkowicz.

POWER TRIP: Jared Demkowicz is slugging .541 in conference play and .568 overall, good for sixth-best in the conference. With six homers, three triples and two doubles, the Grosse Pointe, Mich. native is tied for fourth in the conference with 27 walks, good for a .456 on base percentage.
