A Multi-Homer Game by Demkowicz Helps Baseball to a Split at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA - The Sewanee baseball team earned its first conference win of the season on Saturday in a doubleheader split, falling 11-4 in game one before taking the second game, 14-8, to avoid a series sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-Sewanee started the contest with two runs in the opening frame. The first three batters, Derek Hullings, Chris McNulty and Trey Akins, all reached base. Jared Demkowicz brought the opening run of the contest home on a sacrifice fly. Hullings scored on the play

-The next batter, Beau Allen, brought home McNulty on an RBI single.

-Oglethorpe responded in the bottom of the first inning with a four-run frame. The rally was capped off by a three-run dinger by Matt Motz.

-After a scoreless second, the Stormy Petrels tallied three more runs in the bottom of the third.

-Leading 7-2, OU added two runs in the sixth and single runs in the seventh and the eighth to make the contest 11-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-The Tigers' bats came to life in the second game, as the visitors scored in each inning but the seventh.

-After a leadoff walk by Derek Hullings, Jared Demkowicz went into launch mode with a two-run dinger to open the scoring.

-Beau Allen brought Chris McNulty home, who doubled early in the inning, on a groundout.

-OU added a run in the bottom of the first, but the Tigers came out strong in the top half of the second inning with a four-run inning. Braxton Swanson scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

-McNulty contributed an RBI single to bring home Tyler Dunbar.

-Following a Petrel pitching change, Trey Akins brought the sixth run of the game home on a sacrifice fly.

-Following a Beau Allen walk to load the bases, Bryce Benedict brought Demkowicz home on an RBI base knock to make it 7-1.

-In the third, Demkowicz went yard again for the second time in the contest with a two-run shot to make it 9-1.

-After the Petrels scored four in the bottom of the third, the Tigers added a run in the top half of the fourth thanks to a Swanson RBI single to hit double digits, 10-5.

-After a run in the bottom half of the fourth by the home team, the Tigers tallied four runs in the fifth and sixth innings, led by a two-run dinger by Derek Hullings.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Beau Allen had a 2-for-3 performance at the plate in game one, scoring a run and driving in a run.

-Drew Mancuso (1) recorded a homer in game one.

-Jared Demkowicz and Chris McNulty each tallied three hits for the Tigers in the series finale. Demkowicz added two homers, four RBI and four runs scored.

-Justin Lavender (1-2), in his first weekend start, allowed six earned runs in 2.1 innings.

-Jackson Cook (1-0) pitched three shutout innings in relief, allowing one hit and walk each and punching out two.

OGLETHORPE KEY STATISTICS
-Matt Motz went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and six RBI in the opener. He finished the day with seven RBI in the two games combined.

-Andrew Mink went 4-for-4 in the series finale with a double, a homer and four RBI.

-Kyle Babb (5-1) tossed the win for the Petrels, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings.

-Jackson Harrell (0-2) lasted a third of an inning for OU in the series finale, allowing three earned on two hits and one walk.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will return home for a quick three-game homestand, as they take on SAA foe Hendrix. There will be a schedule change for the traditional Saturday-Sunday series with Easter slated for next Sunday. The series will open Friday with a 2 p.m. first pitch from Montgomery Field.
