Sewanee Rallies Late to Defeat No. 10 LaGrange in 2018 Opener

LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Sewanee baseball team used an eight-run eighth inning thanks to eight walks as the Tigers defeated the Panthers of No. 10 LaGrange, 13-5, Friday evening to start the 2018 season.

-LaGrange opened the scoring in the second inning. After the Panthers began the inning reaching base on a two-base error, Drew Mancuso got the next two batters out. The next five batters singled as five runs came across to give the Panthers a 5-0 advantage after two innings.

-Sewanee attempted to break the shutout in the fifth inning. After a Beau Allen single, Tyler Dunbar singled, and thanks to a LaGrange error, Allen was able to fly around the base paths, but he was gunned down at the plate.

-After a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth, the Tigers broke the shutout in the seventh with a Dunbar single that brought home Chris McNulty.

-In the top of the eighth, the Tigers sent 13 batters to the plate and came around to score eight times in the inning.

-The first three batters reached for the Purple and Gold, with Jared Demkowicz led off the frame with a free pass. After a Trey Akins infield single to put runners at first and second, McNulty found grass with a double down the left field line that brought home Demkowicz to make the deficit three runs, 5-2.

-After a pitching change and a strikeout, Max Murray reached base on an error that brought hoe McNulty.

-After a lineout, Dunbar walked to load the bases. Roberts made it a 5-4 deficit with a bases loaded walk.

-Following a pitching change, the next three batters, Derek Hullings, Demkowicz and Akins, all reached base on a free pass and drove in an RBI.

-Leading 7-5 following the three straight walks, McNulty delivered an two-run RBI single to push the lead 9-5.

-Following a shut-down bottom of the eighth inning on the mound by Lucas DeSantis, the Tigers added four runs in the top of ninth to seal the opening contest of the 2018 season.

-LaGrange is ranked 10th in D3baseball.Com's preseason poll and 35th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's preseason rankings.

-Four Tigers recorded multi-hit games in the contest. Trey Akins finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

-Chris McNulty drove in three runs on a 2-for-5 opening night. He also scored two runs.

-Beau Allen and Tyler Dunbar also contributed multi-hit games for the Purple and Gold with two each.

-On the mound, Drew Mancuso started for the Tigers and tossed four innings, and despite allowing five unearned runs in the second, he struck out three batters and did not allow a walk.

-Nick Ewing (1-0) collected the win after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

-James Poropatic, Ryan Ross and Dawson Weaver contributed multi-hit games with two hits each.

-Richie Post earned the no decision tossing six shutout innings, allowed three hits and fanned eight batters.

-Grayson Bagwell (0-1) suffered the loss for the Panthers, allowing three unearned runs on two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

The Tigers will wrap up the three-game series at LaGrange with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
