ATLANTA (April 28, 2017) – Led by student-athlete Drew Mancuso, the Sewanee baseball team had five Tigers named to the All-Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Teams, Friday.
Mancuso was named to the All-SAA First-Team while Trey Akins and Jackson Cook were named to the All-SAA Second-Team. Freshman Max Murray and senior Jackson Cooper were honored with All-SAA Honorable Mention Team selections.
Arguably the best all-around player in the league, Mancuso was selected as the All-SAA First-Team utility player. In his junior campaign, Mancuso hit .329 while also going 6-4 with a 3.22 ERA. The Tiger pitcher and first baseman ranked among the league leaders in at-bats (143), hits (47), doubles (15), home runs (3), and average.
Additionally, he slugged .483 which ranked 15th in the SAA and drove in 29 RBI. On the mound, Mancuso was Sewanee's number one starter. Along with his low ERA that ranked fifth among all SAA pitchers, Mancuso ranked in the top-five in innings pitched, fewest home runs allowed, wins, and fewest walks.
Along with Mancuso, Cook was outstanding on the mound. Cook limited hitters to a .189 batting average while striking out 23 and allowing only seven earned runs in 25.2 innings pitched. The Tiger reliever allowed only 18 hits and 11 runs while posting a 2.45 ERA.
Finally, Akins was voted to the second team as a shortstop. The Tiger slugger ranked third in the conference in hits (59), third in doubles (14), third in RBI (40), eighth in total bases (79), sixth in average (.383), and 21st in home runs (2).
In conference only games, Akins was even better. He led the league in doubles, ranked third in hits, was fifth in average, and seventh in fewest strikeouts.
