No. 5 BSC outlasts Sewanee in doubleheader

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 28, 2015) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival and No. 5 ranked Birmingham-Southern earned a pair of wins over the Sewanee baseball team Saturday at Striplin Field.

The host Panthers took the opener 11-5 and then won the second game 5-0.

In the game one, BSC jumped out to an early lead scoring single runs in each of the first four innings. The Panthers then added seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 11-0. Sewanee finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as Michael Walker and Tony Dykes added RBIs.

An inning later Ryan Poole drove in Tyler Minkkinen with an RBI single. Then in the top of the ninth, Poole reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Jackson Cooper.

Overall, Dykes led Sewanee with three hits while Derek Hullings and Gus Myer added two. Taylor McCracken, who finished with two hits and three RBI, led BSC at the plate.

BSC starter Blake Stevens earned the win after complete 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts.

In the second game Panther starter Ryan Gaines was outstanding. Gaines tossed 7.0 innings of scoreless ball with seven strikeouts. He allowed only two hits, which came from Sewanee's Dykes and Drew Mancuso.
