Baseball splits SAA doubleheader at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. (Feb. 28, 2015) – After dropping a 6-1 game in the opener, the Sewanee baseball team answered back in the nightcap with a 3-1 victory over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Hendrix, Saturday, at Warrior Field.

With the split Sewanee is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league action.

Game One – Hendrix 6 – Sewanee 1

Behind an outstanding pitching performance from starter Will Nichol (W, 2-0) the Warriors scored two runs in the first, two more in the fifth, and two in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Nichol tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five.

Sewanee finally got on the board in the top of the eighth when Tony Dykes drove in Ben Clune on a sacrifice fly to deep left field.

Overall, the Tigers left seven runners on base and committed three errors. Starter Drew Mancuso (L, 0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, in 5.0 innings.

At the plate Ryan Poole led the Tigers with a 2-for-4 effort. Both of Poole's hits were doubles. 

Game Two – Sewanee 3 – Hendrix 1

Behind starter Charles Warren, Sewanee earned the win in the second game with one run in the top of the third and two more runs in the top of the fourth. Hendrix's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when Thomas Weber singled in Drew Judson.

Warren was outstanding on the mound. He allowed only one run and three hits in 6.0 innings of work. Facing only 22 batters, Warren struck out two while commanding the strike zone with 69 percent of his pitches being strikes.

Offensively, Dykes and Tyler Minkkinen led Sewanee with two hits each. In fact, Minkkinen was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

Hendrix starter Daniel Imbro (L, 1-2) took the loss after giving up three runs, all earned, on seven hits.

Sewanee and Hendrix will conclude the three-game series with the rubber game, Sunday, at noon.
