5/20/10-Sewanee, Tenn. – Sewanee head coach David Poggi announces two more commitments for Sewanee's incoming class. Ford Rushton and Michael Farmer will join the Tiger Class of 2014 this Fall.
Ford Rushton is a 5’9” midfielder from Birmingham, Alabama. He started his high school career at the Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and was the only sophomore to earn a Letter in 2007. He also received a Letter his junior year. In 2009, Ford moved to the Altamont School, where he helped lead the team to victory in the Alabama State High School Championship game.
Among his various athletic achievements, Ford has also been successful in the classroom and community as well. He earned Academic Honors each year of high school and was elected an Altamont Ambassador, representing the school in various activities. He is the founder and president of The Altamont School Outing Organization and a member of the Environmental Club, along with numerous other clubs.
Ford’s coach at Altamont is former three-time All-Conference player and all-time leading goal scorer at Sewanee, Sean Gibson. “I'm just delighted that he's going to continue his soccer career at Sewanee, where I had a great experience. He's a really imaginative player with good vision, who has really come into his own as an attacking midfielder. He's also a free kick specialist. I'm sure he'll contribute great things to the Sewanee program during his time there”, said Gibson.
Michael Farmer is a 5’11” midfielder/defender from Roanoke, Virginia. He will begin his career on the Mountain after graduating from Radford High School in Roanoke, Virginia where he lettered three years. While he was there he helped the team to reach the Virginia State Championship game twice, winning the title in 2008 and finishing as a finalist in 2009. Also as a senior, he was selected to play in the Virginia State High School All-Star game.
Michael played club soccer for the Roanoke Star Elite from 2008-2010. He also had the opportunity to play for the Dormansland Rockets Men’s Team during a 2009 tour of England and played for the Virginia ODP team in 2008.
Along with his athletic achievements, Michael has been successful in his academic and community pursuits as well. He is a 2009 graduate of the American Legion Boys State. From 2008-2010, he was a Virginia Model General Assembly Representative, as well as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Michael also served as Vice-President of the National Honors Society and Vice-President of the Youth in Government Club. In addition to that, he volunteered at a local elementary school, reading to grade school students.
“Michael has a great passion for the game, and he proves that each time he steps on the field. We will be looking forward to the hard work, competitiveness, and love for the game he will bring to our team next year. Our staff has no doubts that Michael will be a great addition to our program both on and off the field”, said Head Coach David Poggi.
