SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee swimming and diving teams hosted Transylvania and LaGrange Saturday and won handily against both schools. “This was a nice win for both the men and the women,” said Sewanee coach Max Obermiller. “Transy is a well coached, highly competitive team. Our Men were great from the opening event and never looked back, winning nearly every close race. The women sealed the victory with Sara Neil winning the 100 fly by .01, then Kaitlyn Breiten winning the 3 meter diving, and then Sara swimming a near life-time best in the 400 IM to secure victory.”
On the women's side, Sewanee had 159 points to 127 for Transy, and LaGrange scored 19 points. For the men, Sewanee topped the Transy 191-88, while LaGrange had 13.
For the Sewanee women, Alix Kloster (Norfolk, Va., Maury) won the 1650 freestyle (18:54.44) and the 500 freestyle (5:31.36). Haley Shepherd (Evans, Ga., Evans) won the 100 backstroke (1:03.98) and the 200 back in 2:17.77. Lizzie Black (Roanoke, Va., Patrick Henry) won the 100 backstroke in 1:12.05. Sara Neil (Decatur, Ala., Decatur) highlighted the women’s effort with a win in the 200 butterfly (2:13.20) and the 100 fly in 59.61, along with the 400 IM in 4:49.07. Neil leads the SCAC so far tthis year in the 100 and 200 fly. Kaitlyn Breiten (Cooperstown, N.Y., Cooperstown Central) won the 3 meter diving with a total of 144.3, and women’s 200 medley relay team was also first place.
For the Tiger men, Peter Schildknecht (Cincinatti, Ohio, Moeller) won the 1650 free in 17:28.83, Will Overton (Jacksonville, Fla., Episcopal) won the 200 free in 1:48.96 and the 400 IM in 4:22.41. Marcus Rochelle (Nashville, Tenn., David Lipscomb) won the 100 back in 58.79 and Philip Link (Atlanta, Ga., Lovett) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.44 and the 200 breast in 2:18.87. Jaime de la Fuente (Prospect, Ky., Trinity) was the winner of the 200 fly (2:03.23) and the 100 fly (55.40), and Ryan Holody (Austin, Texas, St. Andrew's) won the 100 free in 50.09. The 200 medley relay team won for the Tigers and in the diving events, Cole Larson (Kiln, Miss., McCallie) was the men’s 1 meter winner and Victor Cresenzo (Eden, N.C.) won the 3 meter dives. Courtland Day (Barnesville, Ga., Upson-Lee) also won the men’s 500 freestyle in 4:57.56.
“Next week should be a major test for us when conference rival Centre visits Sewanee, along with NAIA powerhouse Union,” continued Obermiller. The meet will start at noon. It's Sewanee's final home meet of the year (and Senior Day).
