SEWANEE, Tenn. – Recent Sewanee Graduate Jordan Casey (Charleston, S.C./James Island) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, according to Teaera Strum of the NCAA. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
“We are extremely proud that Jordan has been selected as Sewanee’s twenty-seventh NCAA Postgraduate Scholar,” said Sewanee athletic director Mark Webb. “Her academic and athletic accomplishments while at Sewanee were extraordinary, and she joins a class of scholar-athletes that simply represents our very best.” Sewanee’s first recipient was Frank Stubblefield in 1965 (Football). The most recent Tiger to earn the prestigious award was Hallie Blunck in 2006 (Diving). Casey is the first tennis player from Sewanee to receive the award.
Casey graduated in the Spring with a 4.03 cumulative GPA and was a Spanish and Biology double major. She is also a 2009 Academic All-American. The Charleston native is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist in 2008. The four-time ITA National Scholar-Athlete has earned spots on the Dean's List, the SCAC Academic Honor Roll and won the Robert Woodham Daniel Prize in Expository Writing.
On the tennis court, Casey has a 60-18 career singles record, a 39-24 career doubles record, finished in 2006 with a final doubles ranking of #15 and was a member of the 2007 SCAC All-Tournament team. She played on NCAA Tournament teams under head coach Conchie Shackelford in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and was a member of the third-ranked team of 2007, which was also the SCAC champion squad that year.
“Through the support and encouragement of my professors, coaches, and teammates, I was given the opportunity to pursue a double major while excelling on the tennis court. The Sewanee experience abounds with individual mentorship and team cohesion; it provides an ideal environment for student-athletes. I am currently conducting seabird research on Southeast Farallon Island, a National Wildlife Refuge 28 miles west of San Francisco. Ultimately, I plan to obtain a PhD in Marine Ecology,” added Casey.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
