SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2009 All-SCAC baseball awards this week and Sewanee’s
Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel) and
Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) picked up All-SCAC nods. Barrett was also named SCAC Freshman of the Year.
"We're very proud of Taylor Barrett and Taylor Irwin. They each had outstanding seasons offensively. This makes two years in a row for Irwin to be named first team, and it is good to know that Barrett has three years left with us. We look for them to be the foundation of good things to come for Sewanee Baseball,” commented Sewanee coach Scott Baker.
Barrett, a first-year right fielder from Murfreesboro, Tenn., hit .407 in his inaugural season with the Tigers (fifth in the SCAC) and led Sewanee in hits (50), runs (38) and walks (16). He also tied for the team lead in home runs (2), doubles (8) and stolen bases (8). Barrett posted a .537 slugging percentage to go a long with a .493 on base percentage. The .493 on base percentage was the third highest in the league.
Irwin, a sophomore third baseman from Nashville led Sewanee with a .410 batting average and logged 48 hits and 31 runs scored. He also drove in 26 runs and was 6-7 in stolen base attempts. This is the second year that Irwin has been named All-SCAC.
