MARYVILLE, Tenn. 4/15/09 – The Maryville College Scots swept a doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers in Division 3 baseball action today in Maryville, Tenn. The Scots took the first game 9-1 and came from behind to win the second game 5-4.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Maryville scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning and added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an early 8-0 lead over the Tigers as the Scots cruised to the 9-1 win.
In the Sewanee half of the fifth inning, back-to-back singles by Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel) and Taylor Burns (Dallas, Tex., Lake Highlands) put runners at first and second. With two outs, Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) singled home Barrett with the Sewanee’s only run of the game.
The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh inning of the seven-inning game, but Sewanee was not able to cut into Maryville’s lead as a double play and a ground out ended the inning and the game.
Andrew Rowan (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) was tagged with the loss as he went 3+ innings allowing seven runs on eight hits. Trey Axe (Austin, Tex., St. Andrew's) pitched the final three innings for Sewanee.
Burns led the eight-hit Sewanee attack with two hits including a double.
In the nightcap, the Scots rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 win and complete the doubleheader sweep. The one-run loss was the seventh of the season for the Tigers.
Maryville reached Sewanee starter Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) for two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead.
Sewanee’s Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) led off the top of the fifth inning by reaching base on an error by the Maryville third baseman. Barrett singled to left field giving the Tigers runners at first and second with no outs. A double into the right center field gap by Burns drove home Reilly and Barrett to tie the game at 2-2. With two outs in the inning, Rascoe Dean (Nashville, Tenn.) blasted a homerun to right field scoring Burns to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. The homer was Dean’s second of the season.
Maryville countered with a single run the home half of the fifth to cut the Tigers’ lead to 4-3. The Scots then pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 5-4 win.
Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) worked an inning in relief for Sewanee and was charged with the loss. Mauro lasted 4.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits.
Sewanee outhit Maryville 10-9. The Tigers were led at the plate by Burns, Barrett, Dean and Axe with two hits each.
Sewanee’s record falls to 8-19 on the season. Maryville moves to 19-15.
The Tigers will wrap up the 2009 baseball season this weekend as they travel to Memphis for a three-game SCAC series with Rhodes College scheduled to begin on Saturday.
