SUWANEE, Ga. – Sewanee footballers Jeremy Character (Marietta, Ga., Wheeler) and Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore)have been selected to the first team All-SCAC squad for their play in 2008, according to Jeff DeBaldo of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Second team All-SCAC selections for Sewanee were Andrew Gould (Chatsworth, Ga., Murray County), Andrew Walters (Madison, Ala., Bob Jones), Stuart Rast (Hapeville, Ga., Lovett) and Tyler Brantley (Danielsville, Ga., Athens Academy). “I am very pleased that we have two players named by the SCAC head football coaches to the all conference team,” added Sewanee coach Robert Black. “ Jeremy Character has had another great year for Sewanee, and it is exciting to see that recognized by the other coaches in the league. I am especially pleased that Chalankis Brown was recognized as an all SCAC defender, also. We are extremely fortunate to have both players back next year.”

Character, a junior defensive lineman from Marietta, Ga., had 32 tackles on the year, with five and a half tackles for loss and two sacks. He also broke up three passes and forced a fumble. Brown, a sophomore defensive back from Millbrook, Ala., is a two-time All-SCAC selection and led the SCAC this year with seven interceptions and 186 int. return yards. He had 57 tackles and broke up five passes. Brown also recovered two fumbles and blocked three kicks.

We are also very pleased to have four other players named to the second team in Stuart Rast, Andrew Walters, Tyler Brantley and Andrew Gould. Tyler and Andrew (Gould) represent the only two seniors in the first and second team groups, so we are excited to have so many quality young players returning,” continued Black. Rast, a junior defensive back from Hapeville, Ga., had 34 tackles, four interceptions and two broken up passes on the year. Walters, a freshman linebacker from Madison, Ala. had 26 tackles, four and a half for loss and four sacks this year. Brantley, a senior defensive back led Sewanee with 71 tackles and logged six and a half tackles for loss. Gould led the SCAC in field goals per game and field goal percentage and was 10-12 on the year. He was also 11-15 in PATs.

Sr. WR Bruce Bentley (Lynchburg, Va., Virginia Episcopal), Jr. DL Bakari Faulkner (Maysville, Ga., Jackson County), Jr. DL Karl Rogers (Tullahoma, Tenn., Tullahoma), Sr. OL Ben Scott (Madison, Tenn., Goodpasture) and Jr. QB Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) were given honorable mention nods for Sewanee, too, taking the total to 11 Tigers recognized in the SCAC football post season.
